- Find all words in the Bacaan with circumfixes
ber-...-an, and analyse them for their meaning. You may
have identified some false items. For instance, you may have identified
berhutan as having the circumfix ber-...an.
This is, however, not the case since the final an is part of
the base hutan. The verb berkenalan
is also not neccessary a ber-...-an verb because it
is based on kenalan 'acquaintance'. The use of a dictionary
is therefore essential. What is the meaning of the ber-...-an
circumfix? In order to answer this question you should not also refer to the previous exercise, but also consult a grammar (e.g.
Sneddon 1.255-60). Write a short summary on your findings (in English).
- a) Find two sentences in a dictionary or on the Internet containing the
words berpengalaman and berkeinginan.
Translate the four sentences. b) Do these two sentences employ the ber-...-an
circumfix? Explain. c) How are these words constructed (identify base and all affixes)?
- Return to the list of ber-...-an words that you have
identified in the text. Review the list again, and make sure that it
only contains items that are based on the ber-...-an circumfix. Were
there other words in the list, which were similarly constructed as berpengalaman
and berkeinginan?
- Identify all words with the circumfix ke-...-an.
As it is usually the case, most of these words are based on adjectives,
and the circumfix ke-...-an is used to form an abstract
noun: hidup 'alive' ==> kehidupan
'life'. Three of the ke-...-an words in the text do not
fall into the category of abstract nouns. In two of the words the circumfix
has the meaning: "possessing to some degree the characteristics
indicated by [base]." (Sneddon 1.124). In the third case, the base
of the word is a noun (cf. Sneddon 1.81 - 1.86). Identify the three
words in question, and translate the sentences in which they occur.
